Designed in the late 1920's, the Sandows chairs by René Herbst feature a nickel-plated tubular frame and the distinctive black covered bungee cord seat and back rest. First shown to the public at the Paris Salon d'Automne des Artistes Decorateurs in 1929, Herbst was inspired by bungee cords which at time were used to wrap parcels.
René Herbst was a French furniture designer and architect, best remembered for his advocacy of the industrialisation of furniture as a form of modern art.
